1924 Germany Old Gorlitz Bohemian Silesia Saxony Houses – Original Photogravure
1924 Germany Old Gorlitz Bohemian Silesia Saxony Houses - Original Photogravure
This is an original 1924 photogravure of Old Gorlitz, Germany. The city of Gorlitz is the eastern-most city in Germany and is opposite the Polish town of Zgorzelec, which was a part of G?rlitz until 1945. Today tGorlitz combines Lusatian, Silesian, German and Sorbian cultures due to its proximity to Poland. Photograph by Kurt Hielscher.
Period Paper is pleased to offer an exceptional collection of historic original photogravures of the landscape, architecture, and people of pre-war Germany. The actual border around the photogravure is larger than what is shown in the digital image, and each image usually has a caption in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish which will be included with the item when shipped. However, we wanted to show you the actual image up close and the dimensions provided next to the “Size” above indicate the size of the actual photogravure only. The total size is approximately two inches larger in width and height. These original photogravures are not to be confused with the more common halftone prints. Each of these photogravures was created from an engraved plate and provides exceptional detail, contrast, warmth, and depth, making them excellent original images for framing.
The Photogravure Process. A photogravure is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate–an expensive and rarely used process today. Through the transfer of etching ink from an etched copperplate to special dampened paper run through an etching press, this process creates an image that registers an extraordinary variety of tones. This unique tonal range comes from photogravure’s variable depth of etch–the shadows are etched many times deeper than the highlights unlike the halftone processes that merely vary dot size.
Please note that there is printing on the reverse.

Bohemian Frump

Bohemian Frump
My favorite lounging area!
Our couch by Haute House is called Bohemian Frump – Just like me. lol! We throw the pillows on the floor when sitting. I’m turning in the trees for wall decoration as soon as I paint the wall – it was going to be gold, but I’m not sure – Any color suggestions? Couch is a little duller than shown here so I would like to brighten things up. ~ Chris

aria’s room, facing the doorway:

the thing i love most is that she has a silk pink water lily (like moi). the decor is fairly bohemian throughout the house. the tapestry in the hallway is well-placed. there is nothing blue in the room beyond knickknacks.

HISTORY OF THE OLD AMERICANA PHOTOS
This image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection which represents one of America’s earliest news picture agencies. The collection richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. The photographs Bain produced and gathered for distribution through his news service were worldwide in their coverage, but there was a special emphasis on life in New York City. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but scattered images can be found as early as the 1860s and as late as the 1930s. (Library of Congress)
